Retro:Spective ---> Giygas

Warning! Readers discretion is advised. I am about to reveal the ending to Earthbound, In doing so I will expose what I believe to be true evil in it's most incomprehensible form. If you have any plans to actually play this obscure SNES RPG, please ignore the following:

Shigesato Itoi stated that his inspiration for Giygas came from a traumatic childhood experience where he mistakenly walked into an adult movie theater and caught a glimpse of a rape scene in the 1957 movie Kenpei to Barabara Shibijin.

In Earthbound, Giygas is the main antagonist, who gains such a chaotically menacing power that it destroys himself. Riddled insanity warped his already corrupted mind to complete destruction. When confronted, Giygas looses his mind completely, and becomes blinded by his own irrationalities. Eventually to the point where he looses awareness completely. Without a body or mind, Giygas manifests himself into a distorted image of suffering, lashing out in a idiotic blind rage. In a sense, comparable to the Lovecraftian god Azathoth.

Giygas manipulation of evil is so powerful that it threatens the existence of the universe. Earthbound begins with a boy meeting a time traveling alien insectoid, who warns him that in the future Giygas initiates the apocalypse. Despite the overlap in time, Giygas is still capable of manipulating the evil in the minds of present day Earth to extend his influence. Even inanimate objects can be possessed and brought to life under the control of Giygas' cosmic power. Earthbound ends as the boy and his friends discover the science necessary to transfer their consciousness into computer mechanics, in order to time travel themselves to confront Giygas as robots..

Upon first meeting Giygas, he is imprisoned within an eyeball-shaped machine designed by Satan. Guarding this machine is Giygas' faithful servant, Pokey -- a boy who learns of the impeding apocalypse, and decides to side with the cult of evil. Pokey claims Giygas only commands "the strong and the able," and advocates Giygas' philosophy of absolute nihilism.

After confronting Pokey, He cuts the power to The Devils' Machine, and releases Giygas from imprisonment. Darkness surrounds the boy and his friends, as Giygas creates a self contained universe of individual hellish torture. He attacks with the incomprehensible logic of a madman. As the children pray for their lives, Earth cries out in hope to aid their sacrifice. The prayers combined effort rips a hole into Giygas, exposing his weakness of once human compassion. Giygas eventually breaks down to electrostatic nothingness as his apocalyptic future dissolves with the refabrication of the universe.

For those willing to take the plunge into Giygas's insanity, I recommend watching this video.
