E3 2008: Nintendo Press Event (Live Updates)
Posted: July 15, 2008 - 10:47 am by Jeremy

The Nintendo Press Event from E3 2008 is getting ready to get underway.  Just hit the jump for the full post, and make sure you keep reloading for all of Nintendo's announcements!

Things are just a few minutes late getting started.

The lights are now dimming and we are underway!

Video package of people playing on the Wii.

"We promise to keep the world smiling!"

Cammie Dunnaway took the stage.  "As you can see, my name isn't Reggie."

She got a Mother's Day card from her son who "loves her more than anything because she works at Nintendo.

She broke her wrist snowboarding at Whistler, it's harder than it looks.  Any comments Scott?  lol

But she doesn't like givin up. So she decided as a snowboarder all she really needed was help from a friend. Here comes Shaun White.

He is playing  Ubisoft's new game (his) using the Wii Balance Board. "Once we get the board involved it enhances the game" he says "I think it's really cool."

Cammie getting on now.  Let's hope she doesn't break her wrist again.  Playing on the half-pipe.

Shaun White Snowboarding omes to the wii by end of the year.

Shaun leaves the stage, and out comes Iwata-san.

Iwata-san says that a paradigm change has taken place in gaming.  "Even Nintendo employees could not have imagined five years later the market would have responded so well that we could be selling bathroom scales.  Millions of them"

Talking about the long shelf life of Nintendo titles like Brain Age and New Super Mario Bros.

Things like Mario Kart DS still show up in the top twenty sales worldwide.  They are like Evergreens.

"Today I can say the teams that create Mario games and Zelda games are both hard at work. They will bring new titles o the Wii"- Sweet!  New Zelda game!  And not a port this time!

"Small teams with small budgets can capture a worldwide audience if they have a good idea.  The userbase has expanded" , he says, showing us pictures of woman, children and older people gaming.

"Intuitive interface can attract gamers we would have never thought of before."

Consumers in Europe are buying 200k DS a week.

"Last year I said we wanted to destroy the barrier between gamers and non gamers.  The strongest evidence comes with Guitar Hero III.  The Wii version is outselling the others."

"What next? Nintendo wants to 'Destroy the psychological barrier'.  Even if it is revolutionary people become tired of a new product. This becomes possible when people try to reproduce an items success.  For all of us in the video game industry, there is danger in standing still.  Most of all, the overrall experience from our product must be increase enthusiasm.  E3 = Engaged, Enriched, Enthused in Nintendo terms.  We seek fresh surprises.  Enjoy the newproducts we have for you today."

"We at nintendo always challenge ourselves to be pioneers"

Katsuya Eguchi, the creator of Animal Crossing, is on the screen.

"I wanted to create a software where players could feel like they are playing together if they are playing at different times"

Showing Animal Crossing City Folk footage.

Talking about there being no goals. he's digging up a ball, now he's waking up in the morning and then going to bed at night

He's showing a kid dressed with a pumpkin head for halloween.

"You could really feel like you are visiting a realistic world with a  24 clock"

Gracie Grace is a fashion store.

Now he's in a beauty salon to change his hair style or put on a mask to look like his Mii.

They have announced Wii Speak!  Its a community microphone that lets everyone talk in a room.  You can send messages to a message board and friends cell phones.  It looks like a speaker phone you put on top of the sensor bar.  So you can talk live while plaing the game with your friends from around the world.

They're showing four characters in an arcade playing little games, hard to tell if people actually get to play the games or if they are just furniture parts.

This new AC is going to be awesome!

Animal Crossing City Folk will be out by the end of the year with the microphone!!!

And here comes Reggie!

"With animal crossing on the way to wii at the end of this year, of course we are pleased. we are even more pleased with our market place"

DS and Wii numbers total over $5 billion.  But they aren't satisfied.

They want to fill casual and core gamer needs.

"By the end of our current fiscal year next march, we think our ds sales will grow to 100 million systems.  People thought 2007 would be the peak year for the DS.  So far in 2008, ds sales are running 12 percent ahead of last years record"

Lifetime pokemon sales is over 180 million

June NPD data may show that the back and forth battle between wii and DS may have shifted for the moment back to the DS

Celebrity ads with famous females caused Brain Age sales to double

"There seems to be an unlimited number of people out there looking to get into our game" says Reggie , "When those june ndp numbers are released on thursday, we wont be surprised if the wii is the best selling console in north america"

"Now third party partners are finding success with wii", he says.

19 third party games have exceeded sales of 400k units, from 11 publishers.

Is the wii for Casual games, legendary IP or new franchises? It's for all of them Reggie says.

"There's no way today we can give you a quick glimpse of everything coming, so they're limiting it to just three new games"

First up Star Wars The Clone Wars. Two guys are swinging around wii remotes like their lives depand on it. It's essentially a light saber figher.  Coming Holiday 2008

Now, Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party.

Showing the Balance Board for it.

Now Call of Duty World at War.  Wii-mote aiming.  They are using the flamethrower right now on everyone on the screen.

Cammie's Back talking about the DS. 30 percent of recipients in 2005 were females.  Last year it was 48%.

Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades is revealed.  It will feature song sharing between games.

Spore Creatures now.  They focused more on the creature game for the DS.

Creating Creatures looks really nice.  And you can share them over WiFi.

Now she is getting into Pokemon. Pokemon Rangers Shadows of Almin.

GTA China Town Wars!  Coming to the DS this winter!  Custom GTA engine!

What if DS and airtravel came together in a different way?  Why cant the DS give me flight info, or where my luggage is or nearby restuarants? This is all being tested.

Could the ds earn a spot in your kitchen?  Cooking Navi is coming to the states!

Reggie is back out.  Talking about the new Wii Motion Plus thingy.  "What this does is make the Wii remote more precise, more intense"

Today we're showing how this worthy successor comes to life using a new game.

A new Wii sports: Wii Sports Resort.  Like a day at the beach.

They're gong to play Disc Dog.  As Cammie rotates her wrist that movement is being mimmicked in real time, that's what wii motion plus does. We finally are getting that 1:1 movement!

She is throwing a frisbee for a dog to catch it.

Reggis is showing off jetskiing now.  You twist the remote to accelerate.

Reggie calls it "cute".

Oh snap!  Fencing!  They are fighting each other.  Split screen shows the view in first person, kinda like Wii Sports Boxing.

Cammie just got knocked into the water.  There is parrying and you can hit high or low and from either side.

"That's why they call me the Regginator!"

"Wii Motion Plus represents a much broader opportunity", Reggie say, "When the worlds best game developers have a chance to work with this,  they certainly will take you deeper before"

"One more Experience coming this holiday..."

They just brought out a balance board.

The lights are out.

It looks like a Rock Band style game.  Using only remote and nunchuk, and the Balance board as the pedal.

It's like a drum sim.  Two drum pedals now.  he's working that hi-hat with his left foot.

Miyamoto is on stage.  He's using a remote to play a sax!!

There's an upright bass player in the background too.

He's just touching buttons to play notes.  The drum guy is playing still

It's Wii Music.

"This year I would like to introduce you to Wii Music.  This game is one of the titles we began designing around wii play, wii sports and wii fit, " Miyamoto says.

Everyone can enjoy music.

"Most music games require you to press buttons with precise timing matching symbols on screen to compete for the strongest performance.  We designed wii music to allow everyone... to experience the joy of performing music.  There is no need to follow any notes or guides to play along.

All you have to do is hold the wii remote and move your hands and body like you would while plaing a real instrument and the wii detects that.  I can play guitar, but I can not play the sax at all.  I was just holding the wii remote pretending i was playing the sax pressing buttons with timing of my preference.  I dont have to worry about playing the wrong note or making a mistake."

Playing a song from F-Zero.

With Wii music you can play 50 different instruments, including the piano, violin, guitar (you play like a real guitar).

Traditional Japanese drums too.  There is a Drum Lesson mode.  And you can use the Balance Board for them.

"Two years ago i conducted an orchestra.  Many of you said i was pretty bad.  We've included both the orchestra game and some others in this game."

Wii music wont evaluate your performance, but it will record videos of your performance.  One person can play each part in a song and create their own music video.  Or you can have up to four players at a time.

Denis Kaigler and some unnamed Treehouse employees round out the band, and they are playing the Mario Theme.

And the song's over.

Reggie and Cammie are backgiving a recap.

"Nintendo simply brings more smiles to more faces"

Reggie is addressing the whole "fad" thing.

"The next challenge is to disrupt your own thinking" Reggie says.

And that's a wrap!

I remember feeling the same sense of "underwhelmed" everytime I saw Nintendo at Gamestop's manager meetings. You'd see one or two things that you thought were cool, but mostly....blah.

It's just like you said... you see a couple things you like, and the rest is boring. They did better than Sony did though, at least IMO
