UFC Cuts Fighter Over Video Game Contract
Posted: November 20, 2008 - 12:07 pm by Matt
UFC fighter Jon Fitch received notice on Wednesday that he has been released from his contract for not signing away his likeness. Jon Fitch just went five rounds with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre this past August and still had 2 fights left on his contact. Fitch had refused to sign an agreement that would have relinquished his likeness rights for the upcoming UFC video game that is due out in 2010. “I had two fights left on my contract, but they always put a clause in the contract that if you lose a fight, they’re able to release you at any time after a loss,” Fitch told “Sports Rage” host Garbriel Morency. “That’s pretty standard with any organization, but it’s pretty incredible that they’d go to those lengths for something like this, over a video game.” The video game agreement would have giving the UFC lifetime exclusive rights to the likeness of Fitch. Representatives for the fighter even tried to negotiate a five or ten year deal for the video game rights. In the end an ultimatum was given and Fitch was released of his contact.
