Bungie has just announced via their official blog that the upcoming stand alone Halo 3 add-on, Recon, is officially getting a name change. Bungie said the following about the reasoning behind the name change:

This new title is a more straightforward account of the experience that awaits and the role you will assume as you explore the streets of New Mombasa.

Apparently they wanted less emphasis on the recon bit and more on the being shot down into a city from orbit in a steel cyllinder not much bigger than a coffin. For those who don't follow Halo backstory, (yes, there is in fact a plot!) ODST stands for Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. These elite guys have shown up in both Halo 2 and 3 as well as in the novels and are known for being the craziest sons of bitches in the Marines.

So remember, it's Halo 3: ODST, not Halo 3: Recon. Bungie has hired a crack team of enforcers to beat anyone they find saying Recon from now, so be sure to get the new name down.
