E3 2009: Hands On The PSP go!
Posted: June 3, 2009 - 3:33 am by markdelete

You followed the live blog of the Sony Press Conference. You may have watched the live broadcast of the event. You did not miss the unveiling of the PSP go. While the PSP go is not coming out until Ocotber 1st but we got our hands it today. So how does new PSP go feel?

Lots of gamers formed quick opinions about the PSP go when the images leaked this past weekend. Some didn't like the look of the button placement. Others were shocked that it lacked a 2nd analog nub. Fortunately all of that reservation quickly fades away when you get the awesome little handheld into your mitts. The form factor is so much better than the wide form of the current PSP model.

The new system is nearly weightless in your hands. You could slide the screen down and skip it across the water easily. The only noticeable weight was the huge hunk of metal on the back of the system to keep fools from running away with it. The button layout is great and should no longer cause my hands cramp up into hideous claws. The analog nub is precise and in the perfect location. The face button feel no different than regular PSP and you can reach the L & R buttons with ease.

I also got to test out the newly announced Gran Turismo on the PSP go. The beautiful graphics popped of the screen. I raced on a super familiar track that is one of my favorites in the series. Steering and braking were spot on and hitting SELECT to change the view was a cinch.

There is not much to complain about here with the new PSP go. While it is definitely not the PSP 2, it is a complete redesign of the PSP we know and love. Killing the UMD and adding 16GB internal memory is exactly what PSP needed. With the PSP go's size, I can actually see myself playing games while being on the go. There is no touch screen like the DSi or iPhone, but it is not needed as you still play all of the coolest PSP games. Waiting for October is going to be excruciating. I already set to retire my PSP 1000.

I am very excited for this system, but IMO a second analog is "exactly what it needed". I can't wait to see one out in the wild, but the thought of no second analog is disappointing. Also, the price isn't solving ANY of Sony's current problems.

I agree, the second analog is what the system needs.

Going completely to digital downloads will hurt the system, and unless they devise a way I can rip my UMDs to a memory stick so I can play my UMD titles on the 'Go', I'll be keeping my PSP-2000.
