E3 2009: Brandon's Day 2 Impressions
Posted: June 5, 2009 - 2:05 pm by Brandon

After such a fantastic day, it was hard to believe things could get better here in L.A.. But get better they did. Hit the jump as I go into my experience with Army of Two: The 40th Day, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, Final Fantasy: Dissidia, and of course, Mass Effect 2.

To get the ball rolling, I'll jump right into my experience with the games over at EA. I played through the first Army of Two and enjoyed it for what it was: a solid fps co-op experience, albeit with heavy bromance undertones. Well, after the first game was released and the community gave some feedback, the team is back and looking to improve. I checked out the game behind closed doors and got a look at what The 40th Day will be bringing to the franchise. The live demo featured Salem and Rios fighting their way through a city struck by disaster. The developers are expanding upon the trademark co-op elements of the series with new teamwork tactics. Players now can fake surrender to while their partner flanks the unassuming enemy. They can also capture enemy commanding officers using that tactic which will then enable them to force the enemies under them to surrender. While we didn't see this in the video, the developers also revealed that the enemies will have the ability to use co-op abilities now as well, upping the difficulty. Be sure to check out Matt's impressions of the game for more details.

I also got to try out The 40th Day for PSP. Following the same story, the developing team for this version decided to go a different route than the console versions for the mechanics. The game plays like old top-down shooters and while it is 3D, they took a more cartoon look for the art direction. This was a good move because the characters are easily recognizable. Controls are simple, Analog sticks to move and the square, x, triangle and circle buttons direct the gunfire. If you're looking for a casual but solid shooter, The 40th Day on the PSP will looks like it will provide it. Simple and straightforward, it provides a pretty enjoyable experience.

Moving over to Square-Enix, I had the opportunity to check out quite a few of their games. The Crystal Bearers takes place a few hundred years after the original Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube. Don't expect any similarities in game play though. This Wii exclusive is an action RPG filled with various mini-games and a lot of personality. I'll have an article later with my detailed experience with the game, but if you're into RPGs, here's another strong reason to get a Wii.

Final Fantasy: Dissidia is the fighting game that lets the player choose from the main heroes and villians from the past ten final fantasy games and battle it out for Cosmos or Chaos in the ultimate good versus evil showdown. There's been a lot of info released about the game already, so I'll only say that the controls are easy to get the hang of and the Brave system provides an interesting twist to the fighting game genre. The graphics are easy on the eye and the voice acting is good. While I was skeptical about the game at first, after playing it, I'm interested in checking it out when it releases this August.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is a sequel to the popular SNES FFIV following the child of Cecil and Rosa, Ceodore. Released in Japan for mobile devices, it was just recently released here in the States over WiiWare. Sitting down to play for a little bit, I can say that it's more of the same. Graphics are virtually the same as the SNES original and gameplay is all but unchanged. If you're a fan of the original and its storyline then this sequel is certainly worth a look.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is coming out this August for the DS and is the first in the series to feature multiplayer. I briefly played the multiplayer where I was able to choose any of the members of Organization XIII. Picking Zexion, I embarked with my team where the game played much like its PS2 predacessors. The game features good graphics for a 3D DS game and the game ran well. It's good to see some more multiplayer titles for the DS and if you're a fan of action RPGs, this is yet another title to watch out for.

Over at SEGA, me and the DS gang got a tour of some of the titles they're publishing in the near future. While we didn't get a chance to play any of them, I got a look at Bayonetta, Aliens Versus Predator and Alpha Protocol.

Bayonetta is the latest action title developed by Platinum Games and definitely has the look and feel of the Devil May Cry series. The protaganist, Bayonetta, fights through her enemies with pistols and various melee weapons, including dual katanas and a giant axe trying to recover her memories.

Alien Versus Predator is looking great so far. We got to see a demo level played through as a Predator taking down humans and aliens. Iconic Predator skills and weapons like the arm blades, plasma cannon and stealth are all present, but the biggest game play change is the jumping. Unlike a typical jump button, you jump in this game by targeting a spot ahead and letting the character leap there automatically. This makes precision jumps onto small areas much easier. Seeing gameplay as the Predator, it seems like it really captures that feel of being the hunter as you stalk the unaware humans and take them out as they are isolated. Aliens are more difficult as they will retreat if found alone and gather more of their own to strike back on their own terms. We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this title so stay tuned for more information.

Alpha Protocol, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, is another title that follows in BioWare's footsteps. This original IP is a modern day first-person shooter role playing game. The mechanics of the game immediately bring Mass Effect to mind, though this isn't a bad thing. Interaction with other characters allow you to choose how you react to them, whether you're suave like Bond or intense like Jack Bauer. This will impact later events in the game, bringing consequences to your actions. Leveling up allows you to choose different areas of expertiese such as stealth, tech or solider. Upon completion of the game, Veteran Mode is unlocked, where new dialouge options are unlocked as well as new weapons, making for some replay value. Whether you're a fan of Mass Effect, or any shooter with heavy role playing elements, this game will be one to look out for.

Speaking of Mass Effect, I've saved the best for last. Expect a full article on the game soon, but I'll briefly touch upon it here. Getting behind closed doors with BioWare, I got to see the new trailer for Mass Effect 2 as well as some live game play. Let me just say that everything great about the first game looks like it's been made better and everything the first one needed work on has been greatly improved. More options in character interaction, new weapon types, an improved combat system, and multiple endings are all leading to a fantastic sequel.

Day 2 was a lot of fun and we're seeing a lot of great titles on the horizon. Keep watching for my impressions of the final day of E3 as well as an in depth look at Dragon Age: Origins, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, Army of Two: The 40th Day, and Mass Effect 2.
