Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ Review

Welcome to DS on DS. This is where I'm going to be taking a look at the Nintendo DS and all of it's games. And when I say all, I mean it. We will be going from Metroid Prime: Hunters to Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends. From Tetris DS to Barbie 12 Dancing Princesses. Yes, I said Barbie.  Every Friday, I will write a review on the game I have chosen for the week.

This week I am going to be taking a look at Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ.

Once upon a time, a girl rescued her Grandma from the Evil Wolf and his army.  Her name was Red "Ready to Rock" Riding Hood.  Afterwords, everything seemed to go back to normal, but now the dead are returning to life.  Welcome to Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ, an action-shooter taking place in the land of fairy tales that just happens to have a problem with zombies.

The game itself is probably best described as an on-rails shooter.  Your character progresses automatically through the levels, and the only movement you control is from side to side in the levels to avoid enemies and obstacles.  Aiming of your weapons, shooting, throwing grenades, dodging, and melee attacks are controlled with the stylus.  You also select your weapons that you find along the way by selecting them with the stylus.  And trust me, you will want to use these weapons.  Honestly, it doesn't get much better than mowing down zombies with a frickin' laser beam.  This all works pretty good.  I didn't experience any control problems, even when things start getting totally crazy.

As far as the enemies that you will face, there are a nicely varied amount.  In fact, each level throws new enemies your way.  They range from standard zombies (one of which reminds me of Jack Thompson, so it makes it even more fun to blast them) to skull-throwing coffins, and of course, zombified fairy tale creatures.  You will face off against Red's Grandma, Zombie Gretel (who attacks you with Hansel's leg), Sleeping Beauty (with the three fairies), and a Zombie Godzilla.  There are more, but come on!  You just can't beat a Zombie Godzilla.

One other thing I need to bring up here is that this game is hard.  I played on normal, and there were some very challenging areas to get through.  This wasn't because of bad controls or anything like that, this game is just difficult.  In fact, the only issues I has with the game were the instances of slowdown that I encountered when there was too much going on at once.  Of course, sometimes the slowdown was a blessing, because it gave me more time to react to the situation at hand.

Overall, if you like shooters, zombies, or scantily clad heroines, this game will not let you down at all.  It is a cheap game, and well worth your money.

Final Score: 7/10
