Posted: August 22, 2007 - 9:00 am by Matt
Harmonix and MTV Games have announced that in 2008 a PlayStation 2 version of Rock Band will release.

Rock Band for the PlayStation 2 system will showcase many of the same challenging modes featured in the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 system versions, but will also debut new game elements specific to the platform. In addition, European versions of Rock Band will feature extensive localized music content for multiple territories, both on-disc and through downloadable content.

In addition to the new about the PlayStation 2 release, ten new songs were revealed today at the Leipzig Games Convention, bringing the total of officially announced Rock Band on-disc songs to 26:
  • "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones
  • "Highway Star" by Deep Purple
  • "Should I Stay or Should I Go" by The Clash
  • "Epic" by Faith No More
  • "Cherub Rock" by Smashing Pumpkins
  • "Creep" by Radiohead
  • "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys
  • "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet
  • "Here It Goes Again" by OK Go
  • "The Hand That Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails

I am happy that Rock Band is coming to the PS2. As a casual gamer who buys one or two games a year max, I'm not going to spend a lot of money on a console that I'm going to play maybe one game on. The release to PS2 is a smart business decision. There are a lot of PS2 owners, like me, who aren't going to plunk down $400-500, or more, in order to play one game. Yes, I'm sure that they are hoping that people will purchase a console just for one upcoming game -- that's the reason why there is all the buzz surrounding which consoles a game gets released to. But gamers like me, if I can even be classified as a gamer, will just wait until someone they know buys it and then hang out with them to play it. It seems to me that the industry is moving away from games that are exclusive to one console. Personally, I think this is a good thing, now I don't have to spend money on an Xbox 360...
