PS3 Folding@Home update coming soon
Posted: December 19, 2007 - 8:34 am by Matt

Sony has announced an update to the PlayStation 3 Folding@Home client, which will "soon" be available to download. The update brings two major changes to the distributed computing project: You can set a timer for the program, after which the PS3 can will itself down after sending all data to Stanford University.

The other change is the addition of a background music feature, which will allow you to play back any track that is stored on PS3 HDD. This is definitely a nice touch as it'll encourage more users to run the application in their downtime.

I personally run this thing quite often. Maybe my PS3 will be the one that cures Alzheimer's!!

Joking aside, I think this is an amazing program they've put in place and I run it 24/7 on my home computer as well as a few hours a day on my PS3. I can even run this while I play WoW with the no graphic client!

It "is a distributed computing project designed to perform computationally intensive simulations of protein folding and other molecular dynamics." Basically you are joining a network cluster and sifting through data. "Accurate simulations of protein folding and misfolding enable the scientific community to better understand the development of many diseases."
