Microsoft drops price on HD-DVD player
Posted: February 7, 2008 - 7:30 am by Jesse

This may be a sign of the times. Microsoft has officially lowered the price of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player to $129.99.

I hate to say it, but it doesn't look good for the HD-DVD camp. We've already seen a number of Hollywood studios leave HD-DVD in favor of Blue-Ray. Microsoft has announced that they are lowering the price of the external drive attachment $50 to $129.99.

Not to mention that you still can use the mail in deal for the 5 free movies. On top of that, many HD-DVD 360 drives still have the King Kong movie packed in the box. Not a bad deal at all.

At the end of the day, it comes down to what you want to watch. Myself, I'll stick with DVD until the dust settles. We've been here before many times and if history shows us one thing, it's that 3 similar media formats can't exist in the retail space together.

Yay! I get to hear more people tell me at the corporate obligation today that "their" format is actually better still. Facts > word of mouth.

Personally, I like HD-DVD better. The fact that the player supports backward compatibility is nice. Jesse is right though, 3 formats can't exist together. Someone has to lose, unfortunately.
