In game ads.
June 18, 2008 - 7:28 am
I know we've talked about this before but it seems to be gaining speed as of late.

In game ads. How do you really feel about them?

I know that racing games and sports games have done this before and most people will think who cares but what about having pizza hut or quiznos in your next fps.

What about running through your next epic rpg and every time you open the character management screen, a subway ad is running along side your character.

I mean we have ad's on the xbox 360 dashboard but what happens when they make us watch a 15 second commercial every time we want to play something, then what?

I know this seems a little extreme but I have a feeling that this is where we'll be going soon. Everyone is looking for a way to cut down on prices and large companies have money to spend on in game ads.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. If it helps to lower the cost of games to $40-$50 for a new title, then I guess I'm game.

I'm completely indifferent about it. As long as the ad placement makes sense, I'm ok with it.

President Cook would like the aforementioned statement stricken from the record and revised:

Ok. Just realized that I can't be indifferent and be ok with it. Soooo, I'm going to go with being ok with it.

As long as the adds don't take away from the experiance of the game. Like, if it takes place in the 12th century, and thre are ads for Burger King everywhere... riight

I know it's way back there, but I think Jet Moto for Playstation was originally the worst for in game advertising :P

I don't mind them at all as long as they are fitting. Skate has billboards that were updated via LIVE and it was always kinda cool to see an add for a movie that was coming out soon or something like that. Dare I say that it actually added to the realism.

oh ya, the skate billboards are bad ass. I remember playing online w/ Matt and seeing an I Am Legend poster, and then the next week it was totally something else. Very cool.

I dont mind as long as it fits, like in sporting events. Race tracks, baseball parks, boxing rings etc. should have some ads in them, and like Matt said when they update it actually adds to the realism. However, it can be really distracting and painfully annoying in other games. I didnt like them in BF2142.

i dont mind ads. realism is what gaming is striving for right? so ads are apart of our life. well at least my daily life in a major city. when its just nothing but the same thing. Last time I play RB6 Vegas it was all 10,000 BC posters, thats lame.
Take all the stuff in MGS4. Regain, iPod, Triumph bikes. Its cool to have that stuff just there or know i can get a bike that was in MGS4. Having Snake say drink PEPSI or I'll shoot you is lame but if they made a limited can I would lust after it.

The problem is, what if the in game ads don't actually end up reducing the price of a game? HMM? Like, 'Oh, we're getting all this sweet ad money AND people are shelling out 60-70 bucks for a title' *rubs hands together*
