Survival Horror or Survival Action?
October 8, 2008 - 11:45 am
So I'm sitting here thinking about Silent Hill 5 which just came out and Resident Evil 5 which will be out next year. I then started to think about the term "Survival Horror" and I had to ask myself; will RE5 still be considered a survival horror game?

The more I thought of it, the more it looked like an action game. Come to think of it, RE4 was almost like an action game as well.

Think about. You're no longer running around a dark scary place with almost no ammo. You're character has become very capable of handling themselves, there are multiple paths to run around and flank enemies and you've got tons of weapons. And forget being trapped in a small house with zombies because there's probably a window you can jump out of? No window, then just toss a flash bang and run out the front door.

Now I'm not bashing RE4 or RE5. I played alot of RE4 and bought it again for Wii but after watching all of the RE5 trailers and gameplay vids, I'm not sure we can refer to this anymore as a "Survival Horror" game.

Yes the enemies are smarter and faster but I felt so powerful in RE4. By the end of the game, it turned into a survival game for the villagers but an action game for me.

I don't want to pass judgment too quickly on RE5 which I'm sure will rock my socks but something tells me, I won't be feeling too much horror while running around with a tricked out shotgun in the middle of the day.

RE4 and 5 were definitely action. It appears that SH is true to its roots but that is about it.

SH4 was definitely Horror. I never had enough items... Probably why I never actually beat the game.
